How to make a great espresso?

The challenge in making great coffee is managing the variables. As there are so many factors that play a part in producing a delicious coffee, the key is to reduce as many variables as possible when preparing espresso. Buying good quality coffee beans is the beginning of creating the coffee experience, however the way it is prepared can either highlight the coffees qualities and flavour notes or completely hide them.

Using the right barista tools can help create consistency to achieve a better espresso.

Distribution is another variable; when the coffee grounds are not evenly distributed in the filter basket it can create channelling and uneven extractions. This can be solved by a few different methods such as a distribution tool, a clump crusher (WDT) tool or grooming the coffee grounds by hand.

Measure glasses are a handy tool to measure the espresso volume extracted and also evaluate the crema.
